Shreck is the main character. He was feared as an awful monster by people for his appearance. So he lived alone near a pond in the woods. In fact, he is very kind.
Donkey is very funny. He makes this story more cheerful. He can talk, so he was a target to be caught by soldiers. When he was running away from them, he was helped by Shreck. Donkey liked Shreck and followed him. He can dance or sing. He sometimes tells funny jokes. He usually cheers Shreck up by saying positive thoughts. In the beginning, Shreck didn't like him. But he became to open himself up to Donkey.
One day, several fairy-tale characters migrate to Shreck's pond. They were expelled by Lord Farquaad and moved there. Lord Farquaad is a king, and moves the fairy tale characters to Shreck's world. He is very small like a child, but his face is like an adult. He is an egoist. So if you are disliked by him, you will be involved as his victim.
Shreck decides to call on him to get back his pond and goes to his palace with Donkey. And they become involved in a tournament. They won the game. And they were asked to help Princess Fiona from a scary castle. It is a requirement to get back Shreck’s pond. So they start an adventure!
The castle is surrounded deep cliff which full of magmas. One old bridge is built across castle and opposite land. Getting across the bridge, Donky is scale because Shreck makes him fear by shaking the bridge. But for that, Donky could get across up. In this way Shreck sometimes shows his kindness.
Entering the castle, Shreck and Donkey go two ways. Donkey goes downstairs, Shreck goes upstairs. And Donkey meets one huge, red and girl Dragon! She gets pleased with him, and runs after him! Donkey runs away and calls Shreck. Instead, Shreck finds to Fiona’s room easily. Fiona pretends to sleep as part of her act as a captive princess. She thinks it is a romantic scene when she is helped by someone. However, in Shreck’s case, it doesn’t happen. He is indifferent to her. He wakes her up by shaking and intends to take her out. When they met Donkey and dragon, and the three runs away. They succeed in escaping by Shreck’s wit.
Fiona and Donkey and Shreck start their travel. First, Fiona complains to Shreck. She determined that the person who helps her will be her destiny. It means he can marry her. But Shreck is monster and is asked to help her by Lord Farquaad. So he says he isn’t her destiny. When it is getting dark, Fiona, suddenly, enters to cave and says good-night. Donkey and Shreck make a fire the outside. Shreck talks Donkey true feelings. He is lonely. He dislikes his own true colors. Donkey encouraged him. Fiona hears what they say.
From the next day, Fiona changes. Fiona wants to make friends with them. Fiona reveals her intention and attitude. In fact, she is different from an ordinary princess. She is not only beautiful but also wild, strong and frank. She fights several men on their way. Donkey and Shreck are very surprised and like her. Shreck also halls in loves with her.
One night, when Donkey enters into old hut where Fiona sleeps, he sees Fiona’s different appearance at night. She looks like a monster like Shreck. Her daytime appearance is different from her night time appearance. She was cursed by an evil witch. She needs to kiss her man of destiny, to return to her real appearance. Donkey asks her to tekk the truth to Shreck. He notices his mind. But Fiona doesn’t want to because of her appearance. Shreck hears that, but he misunderstands what she talks about him.
Next day, Shreck gives over her to Lord Farquaad early in the morning. Shreck breaks up with Fiona. Fiona decided to marry to Farquaad until tomorrow Donkey follows to Shreck.
The contract is realized. Shreck’s pond is returned to him. But he is annoyed by everything. Donky intends to remonstrate him about Fiona. But Shreck doesn’t listen. They quarrel, divide and feel unhappy. Donkey meets Dragon in the woods and makes friends with her. Shreck regrets being mad at Donkey. He meets him and apologizes. And the three members intend to stop Fiona’s marriage, and Shreck intend to confess love to Fiona.
In chapel, Lord Farquaad and Fiona lines in front of altar. Shreck stops the ceremony. Lord Farquaad is very angry and has soldiers catching him. Shreck attacks. And the huge dragon comes in from big stained glass and help Shreck in no time. Shreck confesses love to Fiona and kiss. Suddenly, Fiona glows, and returns real appearance. Fiona’s true appearance is the same to Shreck’s one. But now she accepts self. Everyone watch them warmly. They live happily ever after!
“Shreck” has many elements. It tells friendship, love, loneliness and so on. It also tells importance of personality. Talking donky, monster man and strong or monster princess don’t appear commonly. But they have warm hearts like ordinary people. It’s important to live close together several people.
By the way, I think Donky is key role in this story. If there isn’t Donky, this story doesn’t go on because Shreck doesn’t intend to change his mind. Donky is very important more than Fiona, I think. But if there isn’t Fiona, this story develops slowly. This story has elastic step or rhythm for comedy. So Fiona is trigger for Shreck.
And today, old tale stories like Shrek’s character are treated as slovenly. Lord Farquaad is representative who is adult treating so. I think this story has many meanings of adopting old fairy tale characters. I think if we watch such view, we feel satires from this story.
Shrek has other three stories as series. I want to watch them one day.
