Starring: Ti Lung( 狄龍)/ Leslie Cheung(張国栄) / Chow Yun-Fat(周潤發)
英雄本色(English title "A Better Tomorrow") is a movie directed by John Woo(呉宇森) who is also known as a director of "赤壁(Red Cliff)" and "Face /Off." Actually I don't like his movies because he explains too much violence in his movies. But A Better Tomorrow is impressive, there are some violent scenes in the movie though. This is a movie about brotherhood; the older one is a gangster, and the younger one is a cop.
Story
A man named Ho is a gangster who has a younger brother named Kit. Unlike him Kit wants to be a police officer(doesn't know what Ho does). But when he cares about Kit's life, he swears to finish his criminal life. One day Ho is sent to Taiwan with a new member Shing. But unfortunately it turns out to be a police setup and they run away. But Ho decides to surrender and let Shing escape. Meanwhile Ho's friend Mark kills men who set Ho up, but injures his leg. Moreover the father is killed by a thug.
Three years later, Ho is released from prison. He reunites with Kit who blames him for their father's death. One day he finds Shing reigning as a boss, and Mark is used by him as a errand boy. Mark wants to retake everything taken by Shing. But Ho wants to stay away from Shing because he wants to be rehabilitated for Kit...
I think this movie is the best of John Woo's movies. Some people like his movie because of his intense shootout scenes. Although I don't like it so much, this movie is impressive. There are not so many shootout scenes in the movie and this story has an emotional drama. When Mark berates Kit, he says "Get over here! This is your brother! Take a good look at him! Take a good look! Whatever he's done in the past, he's more than paid you back! He's trying to change his life around! Why can't you accept him? Why? To be brothers..." Although Chow Yun-Fat has many lines less than Ti Lung, his role is impressive. I think Kit's wife Jackie is a good person because she tries to let Kit make up with Ho.
